This blogs primary purpose is to document chronologically the exhibitions, publications, and events that I am part of, and that inspire me most. I hope that over time this blog will pay witness to my growth, and discovery as an artist in the 21st century.
I will be graduating college with a BFA in Photography, and a BA in Art History in one year exactly, at which time I will potentially be in New York attending graduate school. I am 22 years old as of January 2, 2010.
2009:
-
November: Most recently I drove to Austin for Lauren Greenfield's lecture at the Blanton Museum. It was a very good lecture, however I was slightly disappointed in how she kind-of overly victimized the people she documented in her newest film, Thin. I enjoy her older stories with photographs more than her newer commissioned, or film work.
-
August: I began documenting the square Dancers of Texas, and am still photographing and recording at least one dance nearly every weekend. I hope for this to evolve into a full length documentary that will work collaboratively with the images I'm producing.

June/July: This summer I was the intern for Dallas based photography gallery, Photographs Do Not Bend. Under the owners, Missy and Burt Finger, I widened my knowledge on preservation, archiving, and exhibition. I also furthered my appreciation for, and knowledge of Bill Owens, Jefferey Silverthorne, Elliott Erwitt, and others whose works are owned by the gallery.

May: For years I have studied the work of documentary/portrait photographer Mary Ellen Mark; I actually credit her for inspiring me to become a documentary photographer in 2005 when I first looked at her series on the Prostitutes of Bombay. I knew at that point that I wanted to be as bold, honest, and as strong a photographer as she was. This past summer I was lucky enough the work beneath her in Oaxaca MX during one of her workshops. I can not adequately explain how this has changed me as an artist, and person, as well as my photography. She will continue to be one the most influential artists that I look up to, and I hope to work with her more in the future; as it has changed my life immensely. While I was in Mexico I met and received a tattoo from MEM's friend, and fellow artist Dr. Lakra.

Shows:

April: I had two pieces selected for the University of North Texas annual Voertmans exhibition from my piece on Something Fabulous, a drag performance group in Dallas Texas. The exhibition stands to display the best work from students within the fine art department, and is not exclusively a photography exhibition. It was juried by John Pomora, and 66 final pieces were selected.

March: I was part of the 3rd Annual Student Art Show, "Artistically Speaking," at the University of North Texas. This year's theme, "Leaving a Legacy," was designed to heighten public awareness about topics such as gender equality and women's accomplishments. The art show was held at the Cora Stafford Gallery, and I had eight pieces in the exhibition.
- February: My work was exhibited in the "Valentines day is..." exhibition in Addison Texas.
[Just a short recap] 2008:

September: I was named the "Biggest RENT fan" and was flown to New York for the first time to witness the closing of RENT on broadway.
After transferring to the University of North Texas from the University of Texas at Austin, I was named an International Golden Key Scholar, and was placed on the Dean's List- both honors that I plan to carry through graduation.
